It is located in the dermis, the layer of skin beneath the epidermis. The hair follicle contains the root of the hair, the shaft, and the sebaceous glands. The root of the hair is embedded in the skin, and the shaft extends above the surface of the skin. The sebaceous glands produce sebum, an oily substance that coats the hair and helps to protect it from the elements. The hair papilla is a small, bulb-like structure located at the base of the hair follicle.

When a hair is actually growing, epithelial cells around the dermal papilla multiply. There is another outer layer, and this is known as the stratum basale of the scalp’s epithelial surface.
